SOLAR DESIGN

QMBA Excellence in Energy Aware Homes
Project: 15 Regent Court Yaroomba
Builder: Tony Hill of Dome Systems

Special Features of the Project
• Combines the strength and energy efficiency of geodesic domes with the elegance and style of a Queenslander to create a truly unique and innovative home.
• Extensive use of plantation timber and timber from sustainable logging in re growth forests.

Passive Solar Design

• One Meter wide eaves on the eastern northern and western walls shade house in summer and let winter sun into house.
• 900 mm eaves on upper level windows shade mezzanine floor in summer and allow warming winter light in.
• Upper level windows open to release hot air in summer and close to trap sun's heat in winter.
• The circular design captures northern aspect advantages although the site faces south-west.
• The House is naturally warmer in winter and cooler in summer because a circle is the most efficient way to enclose space. This means there is less exterior wall surface to gain or lose heat through.

Building materials

• Walls and ceilings insulated with Air Cell. Air Cell reflects radiant heat and provides a barrier against convective and conductive heat. It has an 'R' value of 2.5 in the ceiling and 1.8 in the walls.
• Walls and roof are made of custom orb zincalume iron cladding for heat reflection.
• The building was constructed into the side of the hill to use earth as heat sink and minimise cold drafts.
• Timber louvre's and Laserlite Apollo shutters on western walls stop heat entering rooms in summer whilst retaining heat more efficiently than glazing in winter.

Ventilation

• North-east, South-east and North-west breezeways combine with upper level windows to allow superior cross-ventilation.
• Skillion roofing and high ceilings channel hot air up into central dome and out upper level windows or apex ventilator.
• Fanlights above doors allow hot air to escape.

Lighting

• All rooms have an abundance of natural light.
• Energy efficient globes and 12V down lights used throughout house.
• Clear Laserlite around top of walls allows extra light to enter rooms
• Upper level windows give excellent lighting and ventilation to the open plan living areas that are centrally located in the middle of the house.
• Zincalume mini-orb ceilings, reflective eaves and polished Timber floors enhance lighting to all rooms.

Hot water and other Building Services

• Solar hot water system with instantaneous gas booster.
• 1500kw grid connected solar power system provides up to 90%
(in Summer) of residents power needs.
• 22000 Litre Rainwater tank supplies all household water except for toilet flushing.
• Town water backup system for extended dry periods.
• Gas Cook top.
• Energy efficient appliances and AAA rated shower and tap fittings.
