History of Mt Coolum

Mt Coolum stands at 208m and is the 2nd largest monolith in

Australia next to Ayers Rock.
Aboriginal legend explains the main geography of the local area as a story
of love and loss. Coolum was betrothed to his love Maroochy. One night,
Ninderry a rival from another clan, stole the beautiful Maroochy.
Coolum was able to rescue his bride, but was chased down by Ninderry.
He caught up with them, and, throwing a boomerang, succeeded in
knocking off Coolum’s head. This rolled into the sea and is represented
today by Mudjimba Island. Mt Coolum represents his body.
For his treacherous attack, the wrathful Gods turned Ninderry into stone.
(Mt Ninderry) Maroochy fled inland where she wept so copiously that her
tears flowed down the mountain to form the Maroochy River.

History of us

The Dome House is the culmination of a 10year dream that started in
Hawaii in 1994. It was there at The Business School for Entrepreneurs,
that I was first introduced to the work of R. Buckminster Fuller, a famous
American philosopher, inventor, designer and architect.

The Geodesic Dome was his most famous invention. It was the lightness,
strength, beauty and energy efficiency of the domes, which first inspired
me to build one. On returning to Australia I was introduced to Diann
through some mutual friends. Her passion for healthy food and love of
entertaining lent itself to a B&B. So we decided to combine our passions.

However it was another 7 years before we found someone who could build
us what we wanted. Tony Hill (Atrium Homes), a builder from Hervey Bay had also become fascinated by Domes. After 8 years of research and design he came up with the design that we
have used as The Dome House.

In 2000 he was building his first one at Kookaburra Park near Bundaberg.
He was posting photos on the web of the dome he was building.
I stumbled across his site at 4 am one morning, and the rest as they say
is history!

We had a vision for a sustainable house that combines the strength and
beauty of a geodesic dome, with the elegance, style and character of an
old Queenslander. A place where sustainability meets luxury and comfort.

Tony and his business partner Ernie brought that vision into reality.
The Dome House has exceeded our wildest expectations. It has an energy
that can only be experienced, and many of our guests have expressed this
view in their testimonials. We invite you to experience that energy and
hospitality for yourself.

Peter Enright.
